There is no conventional happy ending and yet even at it's blackest, the story of Sam Berek's stroke and the battle for rehabilitation undertaken by his wife and family constantly affirms life, nourishes hope, and offers encouragement to other victims and their families. In it's own way this is a story of victory - the victory of the courage of ordinary people faced with extraordinary cirsumstances, and yet determined not to give in to despair, the conventional wisdom of doctors, nurses, or any of the other experts who have somehow contrived a system which all too often loses sight of the vulnerable human beings at the centre of it. *** Quantity Available: 1. He continues: 'Charles P. Curtis Esqe. is one of the most distinguished members of our Bar, - a lawyer of long standing & large practice, who breaks away from his profession at engagements for a few months, to pay a first visit to the land, from which all our Laws, & many of our liberties, come. / No one is better acquainted than Mr. Curtis with our legal & judicial system, or with our Institutions generally; - & I may add that no one is better entitled, from his social as well as professional position, to the highest consideration at home or abroad.' Add to basketFirst edition, a specially bound presentation copy, inscribed on the title page: "Mr A. Thibaudeau, from the author". This edition includes Senior's July 1821 review of the state of British agriculture - his first published analysis of any economic question, and a relatively orthodox discussion of free-trade doctrine. Senior's dedicatee is probably Adolphe Narcisse Thibaudeau (1795-1856), the editor of the radical Paris newspaper Le National who spent time in England after 1832 and corresponded with John Stuart Mill, a contemporary of Senior at the Political Economy Club. In an 1834 commissioner's report, Senior thanks "M. Thibaudeau" for providing information on foreign labourers and poor relief. This edition collects seven offprint articles from 1821 to 1835, with a new title page and with the material not by Senior obscured by overslips. Senior's literary criticism of the Waverley novels remains frequently cited in studies of Scott's work. The reviews in this collection cover several of Scott's lesser-known works, including The Fortunes of Nigel (1822) and Peveril of the Peak (1823). Karl Marx judged Senior the "bel-esprit of English economists, well-known, alike for his economical 'science' and for his beautiful style" (Capital, vol. I, sect. III). This binding is found on the other inscribed copies which have come to market. Goldsmiths' 31901. Octavo (213 x 132 mm). Bound for presentation in contemporary straight-grain calf, smooth spine ruled in gilt and decorated in blind, with red morocco label, covers panelled in gilt, brown coated endpapers, edges sprinkled brown, Light bumping and wear, minor browning and foxing to endpapers and contents: a very good copy.

Add to basketThe recipient is not named (the salutation is to 'Mylord'), but William ends with compliments to 'Lady Auckland', and the letter also contains a reference to Eden Park. 1p, landscape 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper, laid down on part of leaf cut from album. Signed 'G. F. Pr Hed.d'Orange'. The mount is captioned, in a contemporary hand, 'George [sic] Prince of Orange (Holland) date 1798'. Despite this, the indications are that this item in fact dates from 1795, the year in which William accompanied his father the stadtholder William V to exile in England (from which this letter clearly written: see the reference to Eden Farm and to 'nos sejours dans ces Contrees') following the Batavian Revolution. His father remained in England, while he returned to the continent in the same year. Supporting this assumption is the reference in the letter to 'tristes circonstances qui ne vous permettent pas de quitter Edes fam [sic, for 'Eden Farm']', perhaps a reference to the death of Auckland's four-year-old son George in 1795. He thanks him for the care he has taken over 'une lettre de Vienne', and expresses regret at not seeing the recipient and 'Mylady cher S. A. R. Madame la Princesse'. He is conscious of the sad circumstances which have prevented them from leaving 'Edes fam'. He hopes that 'pendant nos sejours dans ces Contrees' he has the satisfaction of seeing him and assuring him 'verbalement' of his 'considerations particulieres'. In a postscript he writes of his father: 'Mon Pere vous fait remercier pour l'envoi du Texte [?]', and presents compliments 'a Lady Auckland'. See image.

Add to basketFirst edition, presentation copy to the radical Whig politician William Pleydell-Bouverie, third earl of Radnor (1779-1869), inscribed on the title page "The Earl of Radnor from the author". Radnor was a supporter of "parliamentary reform, the new poor law, the abolition of slavery, and repeal of the corn laws. [His] advocacy of universal manhood suffrage, the secret ballot, annual parliaments, and disestablishment of the Church of England made him genuinely radical" (ODNB). Senior's work arose from research commissioned by Lord Palmerston in 1833, who enquired into the variations between European and American methods of administering relief and the different classes of paupers. "Senior's general standpoint. was that under the un-reformed system, relief of all types tended to create its own demand by destroying the incentive to energy and providence; that reform must by definition remove this discouragement by making the position of the independent able-bodied pauper; that it must also differentiate as far as possible between those who attempted to provide for old age, sickness etc., and those who did not. To this end the Poor Law must distinguish between poverty and pauperism; between a low standard of living and inability and/or unwillingness to reach even that low standard" (Bowley, Nassau Senior and Classical Economics, p. 296). Einaudi 5251; Goldsmiths' 29196; Kress C.4036. Octavo (210 x 132 mm). Contemporary straight-grain calf, red morocco label, brown endpapers, brown speckled edges. Light rubbing at extremities, minor foxing to contents; a very good copy.
