Sheet Music First Edition
Collegiate by Moe Jaffe and Nat Bonx was published in 1925 by Shapiro, Bernstein & Co., New York, during the height of the Jazz Age collegiate-song craze. This lively novelty number captures the exuberant spirit of Roaring Twenties campus culture with humorous lyrics, dance-band rhythms, and period slang. The issue includes ukulele accompaniment arranged by 'Dick' Konter, reflecting the enormous popularity of the ukulele in American popular music during the mid-1920s. The striking Art Deco-influenced cover features a stylized caricature smoker and an inset performance photograph of The Seven Harpists, creating a visually memorable example of Jazz Age graphic design. Condition is Very Good overall. Mild edge and corner wear consistent with age, light handling marks, and minor toning are present. Interior pages remain clean and complete with notation fully legible. The cover retains strong color contrast and graphic appeal, making this an especially attractive collectible example of 1920s Tin Pan Alley ephemera. First edition, 1925, Shapiro, Bernstein & Co., New York. Includes period publisher advertisements to rear cover for contemporary dance and novelty songs. Moe Jaffe (1901-1972) was an American songwriter, lyricist, and later film producer best remembered for novelty and popular songs of the Jazz Age, including the enduring standard Collegiate. His work often reflected the slang, humor, and youthful energy of 1920s American culture. Nat Bonx, a collaborator during the Tin Pan Alley era, contributed to several novelty compositions associated with dance orchestras and vaudeville entertainment. Together, Jaffe and Bonx helped shape the collegiate-song craze that became a defining musical trend of the mid-1920s. 'The Seven Harpists' were a novelty vaudeville and stage ensemble active during the 1920s, remembered primarily for combining harp performance with synchronized theatrical presentation during the peak of Jazz Age revue entertainment. Rather than presenting classical harp music in a formal concert setting, the group adapted the instrument to popular dance-era tastes, performing fashionable arrangements, novelty numbers, and visually choreographed routines on theater circuits and in touring stage productions. Shapiro, Bernstein & Co. was one of the major Tin Pan Alley music publishers of the early 20th century, founded in New York in 1900. The firm published numerous popular standards, novelty songs, Broadway numbers, and dance hits during the ragtime and Jazz Age eras. Their catalog included works by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and other leading American songwriters, making the imprint highly collectible among sheet music enthusiasts today.
