Nathaniel Wyeth's failed attempt to establish anAmerican commercial interest in Oregon was directlyinspired by Hall Kelley and his promotion of Oregon. Thisbook contains Wyeth's letters before and during his trips toOregon, as well as his journals of both expeditions. Thejournals contain excellent information and include one ofthe most flattering portrayals of natives available (seepages 191-193). However, his letters are the unexpectedgem of this publication and contain real insight into thebusiness of setting up an expedition, even to the extent ofwriting to the father of one lad determined to join. Wyethwrote a few letters to Kelley himself, showing increasingimpatience with the would-be organizer, while his ownplans advanced to fruition. (Jones & Givens, Oregon 100, #98).

CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light wear and chipping to edges and rear cover. Chipping to the cover is rainy normal as the University Press used paper that has become brittle over the years. This copy is better than others I have had. Interior has bookplate of former owner on preliminary page, else clean. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: In the early 1830's, Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth led two fur trading expeditions to the American Northwest and set up two trading posts in Idaho and Oregon, including Fort Hall. This publication includes 245 letters and journals of his two overland expeditions to Oregon Territory. His plans included trading, trapping, establishing a salmon processing industry and farming; all in a manner to help secure the area for American possession. This is an important narrative for context in the larger struggle for control of the fur trade in the interior Rockies between the Americans and the HBC. Copy starts with correspondences from the letter book of Capt. Nathaniel J. Wyeth on his expeditions to Oregon starting in Aug. 1831. Copy also has 2 maps. 1 shows first expedition route 1823-3. The second map shows the second expedition, 1835-6. Second map has bent at the fold, approx 1 1/2 inches, however, both maps are fully intact and complete. Copy is very clean, tight and complete.
