This volume combines several of the reconnaissances including the landmark one by Simpson of the Navajo Country.These were the first published reports that opened West Texas and New Mexico to travel and settlement. Simpson's report is considered one of the most accurate and complete descriptions of the Zuni and Pueblo Indians and he was the first to describe Chaco Canyon, Inscription Rock, Canyon de Chelly and Pueblo Bonito. (Early map to show the location of Fort Worth) The color plates are the earliest chromolithographs printed in as government report. Johnston was trained as a civil engineer at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating in the same class as Robert E. Lee. He served in Florida, Texas, and Kansas. By 1860 he achieved the rank of brigadier general as Quartermaster General of the U.S. Army. Johnston was an engineer on the Texas-United States boundary survey in 1841; he returned to the area, was appointed chief topographical engineer of the Department of Texas, and served from 1848 to 1853. In the fall of 1856, Johnston was transferred to a depot for recruits at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. In 1857 he led surveying expeditions to determine the Kansas border. Later that year, Davis was replaced as Secretary of War by John B. Floyd, a native of Abingdon and a cousin of Johnston's by marriage. He had been a former guardian of Preston Johnston. Floyd made Johnston a brevet colonel for his actions at Cerro Gordo, a promotion that caused grumbling within the Army about favoritism. In 1859, President James Buchanan named Johnston's brother-in-law, Robert Milligan McLane, as minister to Mexico, and Johnston accompanied him on a journey to visit Benito Juárez's government in Veracruz. He was also ordered to inspect possible military routes across the country in case of further hostilities. Condition: Recased and housed in an attractive custom enclosure else very good.…

Stephenson and McKee "Virginia in Maps," p. 194: "Topographers had already surveyed more than 1300 miles and issued more than 1200 maps prior to the army's passage over the Rapidan River on the night of 3-4 May, 1864, the beginning of U.S. Grant's major offensive in Virginia that led from the Battle of the Wilderness on 5 and 6 May to the ten-month siege of Petersburg beginning in mid-June and finally to R.E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox on 9 April 1865. [Bvt. Brig.-Gen. Nathaniel] Michler's men made more than 1600 photographic sketches between the time of the river crossing and 30 July 1864. The first state of this rare and important Civil War map of Kentucky and Tennessee, and still one of the largest maps of those two states ever produced. Completed by accomplished engineer James Hervey Simpson (surveyor for the Abert expedition, among many other accolades) and lithographed by Cincinnati's own Ehrgott, Forbriger & Company, this map was commenced under Don Carlos Buell and finished under Ambrose Burnside for the express use of the Union army. Maps of the southeastern United States were scarce and of generally poor quality at the outbreak of the Civil Warveteran surveyors Michler, Sitgreaves, and Simpson spent two years compiling the present work, at the time the largest and most accurate depiction of the region (despite a note on the Library of Congress copy declaring it "Full of errors" and "worthless so far as the 5 northern counties are concerned"). By the time the map was actually issued in 1863, however, Tennessee was more or less firmly under Union control. Kentucky remained the site of considerable action in early 1863, but was relatively quiet in the second half of the year. In addition to military encampments (many of them placed incorrectly, though whether by accident or as intentional obfuscation is unclear), the map goes to great lengths to record infrastructure, including current and future railroads, highways, iron works and mills, post offices, and coal fields. These maps were valuable military intelligence, and closely guarded for that reasona manuscript note in the lower left corner of this copy reads: "Officers to whom the Maps are sent will hold them useful for the public service and be careful to transmit to their successors in command." This important map is present here in its first state, with the lithographers' name printed in an arc and the "out line of coal field" added to the later issue unmarked. Interestingly, the location of Camp Burnside on the Cumberland River (not present in the first state but added for the second) has been appended in red ink at the appropriate location.
