Reason Demands That Science Be Used To Understand And Improve Society And In Particular Its Institutions And Government; But The Demand Is Unreasonable, As Science Has Boundless Universal Audience And Participation And Review And Analysis And Criticism Subject To Explicit Standards, Whereas Society Does Not- Its Standards Are Vaguely Philosophical But Essentially Clan-Specific And Religious. To The Everlasting Surprise Of Society, Its Standards Are Occasionally Revised By Popular Sentiment When Experience, Including Some Consideration Of Science, Is Overwhelmingly Indicative Of Its Failings. The Academicians Here Assert Some Scientific Expertise In General, Which Is Not The Way Scientific Expertise Works In Social Concerns.

Staplebound. Condition: Good. Contemporary DTIC reprint. 142 pages per Document Control Data sheet. DTIC stiff front cover removed. Rear cover in place. In January 1972 a group of seismologists from several countries met to discuss problems related to the seismic detection and identification of underground nuclear tests. Considerable interest was expressed in a proposal that a cooperative attempt be made to better assess the capabilities of deployed seismic instrumentation for monitoring world wide seismic activities. Informal collaboration followed. A list of seismic events for the period 20 February to 19 March 1972 (The International Seismic Month) has been compiled using short-period data from a large number of seismic stations and arrays. Hypocenters and other parameters have been obtained for every event and are presented along with comparisons with other event lists for the same time period. Also included are the results of experiments designed to calibrate certain parameters which have been selected to indicate the accuracy of estimated depths and epicenters. The ISM list contains 996 verified events. Prepared for Electronic Systems Division Advanced Research Projects Agency. The work reported in this document was performed at Lincoln Laboratory, a center for research operated by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This research is part of Project Vela Uniform, which is sponsored by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense under Air Force Contract F19628-73-C-0002. Seismic events are occurrences in which energy is briefly released in the Earth's crust, resulting in a series of seismic waves which move through the crust. In some cases, the energy can be intense enough that it is felt in the form of an earthquake, while in other seismic events, the energy is so mild that it can only be identified with specialized equipment. Seismic events are of immense interest to researchers known as seismologists, and monitoring stations used to track seismic activity can be found in many regions of the world. A number of different things can cause these events. Some are induced by human activities such as setting off explosives or running heavy machinery. Others are caused by geological activity such as the shifting of the Earth's plates, movement along a fault, or volcanic activity. It is difficult to predict seismic events, but information about such events can be used in the study of geology, and in the tracking of long term trends.
