The archive contains a file of newspaper clippings including coverage of the Irish army in the Congo, notes & material relating to military matters, Procedures relating to duty in the Congo, military training courses, education, Padraic Pearse, The Siege of Clonmel, the O'Neill family, James Quinlan & the Carlow Trust, lectures given on Leadership, a notebook with an alphabetical index of D.F.R's (presumably regulations), a mss. notebook with a structured approach to family ancestry, work in Progress, personal records which include a photo of Col. O'Neill & more. Colonel Eoghan (Eugene) O'Neill (1919-2007) was born in Clonmel. educated in Knockbeg College, Carlow, under the provisions of the Dr James Quinlan bursary. (Quinlan was physician to the tsar of Russia, having been captured as a member of Napoleon's army in Moscow). A keen athlete, he excelled at Latin and Greek. In his Leaving he secured first place in Ireland for Irish. He was commissioned in 1939 & served with the 7th, 9th & 13th battalions. He rose through the ranks and became a Colonel. He was in charge of the cadet school at military college & at that time went to the Congo where he led the 34th infantry battalion on United Nations peace keeping duties. After the Katangese rebel government seized Elizabethville airport, he was ordered to retake it. His men caught the rebels off guard, and the airport was taken without a shot being fired. He retired from the army voluntarily in 1966. He remained with the reserve until 1979. He was actively involved in promoting the Irish language and in his writings.
