This era saw significant social and political shifts within the Navy, culminating in events like the Invergordon Mutiny of 1931. Book Theam's: Anthony Carew s book The Lower Deck of the Royal Navy 1900 39: The Invergordon Mutiny in Perspective explores these themes in depth: Harsh Discipline and Conditions. The Naval Discipline Act imposed severe punishments for infractions, and life on the lower deck was often gruelling. Desertions were common, with nearly 100 men leaving the Navy monthly in the early 1900s. Emergence of Reform Movements Despite bans on collective representation, sailors began organizing informally to push for better conditions.
