Published i…n New York by Fowler & Wells Co.—the dominant late 19th-century publisher of phrenological texts—the book served as an accessible, mass-market handbook designed to teach laypeople how to judge human character, intelligence, and moral disposition by evaluating cranial contours and facial features. Describes: Phrenology ("Bumpology"): Maps mental faculties, emotional traits, and talents directly to specific regions and "bumps" on the human skull. Physiognomy: Interprets facial traits, eye spacing, nose shape, chin line, and expression to assess temperament, moral capacity, and mental tendencies. Temperaments: Classifies individuals into various physiological types (e.g., Motive, Mental, Vital) to explain behavioral tendencies and physical constitution. The book contains dozens of woodcut and vignette engravings illustrating head shapes, facial profiles, and temperament types. It relies heavily on visual comparisons using historical figures (such as Napoleon), notable contemporaries, criminals, "idiots," and non-human animals (like dogs and horses) to demonstrate visual contrasts. Also includes guides on choosing professions, evaluating personal health, managing marriage compatibility, and distinguishing sanity from "lunacy".
