Afirmaba que durante una representación el espectador debe olvidarse del director e incluso del autor, entregándose por completo al actor, pues es el actor quien habla, no el director ni el autor. En este libro se ofrece una selección del extenso legado literario de Nemiróvich Dánchenko, desde episodios de la creación y los primeros montajes del Teatro del Arte hasta material documental de las puestas en escena que hizo en solitario, pasando por reflexiones sobre el teatro de Gorki, la adaptación a la sociedad nacida de la Revolución de Octubre o el arte del actor. Vladímir Ivánovich Nemiróvich-Dánchenko (1858-1943) fue un escritor, director de escena y pedagogo de importancia fundamental en el teatro ruso. Dramaturgo de prestigio en la última década del siglo XIX, dirigió la sección teatral de la Sociedad Filarmónica de Moscú, formando a actores como Vsévolod Meyerhold y Olga Knípper, que más adelante sería la esposa de Antón Chéjov. En 1897 mantuvo una entrevista de doce horas con Konstantin Stanislavski, que dio origen al Teatro del Arte de Moscú, posiblemente la compañía que más ha influido en el teatro del siglo XX. Fue codirector de esa agrupación con Stanislavski hasta la muerte de este en 1937 y a partir de entonces la dirigió en solitario hasta su propia muerte. Codirigió con Stanislavski todas las obras de Chéjov y Gorki montadas en el Teatro del Arte y también dirigió obras en solitario.
