Un des 5 exemplaires justifiés sur Hollande (seuls grands papiers), notre exemplaire portant le n°1 est celui de l'éditeur Pierre-Victor Stock. Envoi autographe signé de l'auteur à Stock sur le faux-titre. Reliés en tête de volume : Les deux cartes manuscrites qui ont servi de modèle aux deux cartes du volume, cinq courriers de l'auteur adressés à son éditeur Pierre-Victor Stock et un billet autographe signé de l'écrivain anarchiste Charles Malato. Enfin, cinq lettres adressées à l'éditeur Albert Savine (1859-1927) et datées de 1892 viennent truffer l'ouvrage. Le capitaine Gustave Nercy est destitué de son grade militaire en 1891 pour avoir refusé de marcher contre les manifestants de Fourmies le 1er mai de la même année. Rendu à la vie civile, il occupera désormais son temps à écrire "La future débâcle", ouvrage où il prédit une défaite future de l'armée française pour des raisons qu'il juge structurelles (préjugés de classe dans l'état-major, politiques du gouvernement, etc.). L'éditeur Albert Savine, avec lequel il entretient une correspondance loin d'être désintéressée (cf. lettres jointes), a sans doute décidé de l'éditer, malheureusement il fait faillite en 1897 et cède son fonds à Pierre-Victor Stock, l'éditeur des anarchistes, qui lui, se chargera d'éditer l'ouvrage polémique de Gustave Nercy. Le livre fait grand bruit dans les milieux intellectuels de la IIIe République, les critiques fleurissent dans les revues, notamment dans la Revue Blanche et dans L'intransigeant où Charles Malato lui réserve un accueil plutôt chaleureux, encouragé, il est vrai, par son éditeur : Pierre-Victor Stock (cf. lettre autographe signée). Rétrospectivement, l'ouvrage est souvent lu comme préfigurant les débats qui traverseront l'armée française jusqu'à la veille de 1914 : modernisation, professionnalisation, rôle des élites militaires, etc. Page de titre détachée, certaines lettres présentes des déchirures aux pliures (sans manque). Intéressant document.
