Im Zentrum des Werkes steht Nerreters Anliegen, die christlichen Konfessionskirchen einander anzunähern bzw. zu einigen. In enger Korrespondenz mit dem Werk "Unterschiedliche Gottesdienste in der gantzen Welt" (1674) des schottischen Theologen und Schriftstellers Alexander Ross (ca. 1590-1654) beschäftigt sich der Autor mit den Anfängen und der Ausbreitung des Christentums in der antiken Welt, mit den Verfolgungen der Kirche, mit dem Aufkommen der Häresien und deren geschichtlichen Ausformungen sowie den Kirchenspaltungen, die es nun zu überwinden gelte. Pietistisch inspiriert, suchte er nach dem christlichen Kern, der allen Gläubigen gemeinsam sei. Auch nichtchristliche Religionen bezieht Nerreter in seine Betrachtungen ein, an der Vormachtstellung des Christentums läßt er allerdings keinen Zweifel. Nach Tätigkeiten als Hofkaplan, Diakon und Konsistorialrat in Oettingen kehrte Nerreter 1694 als Diakon der Heiligen-Geist-Kirche in seine Heimatstadt Nürnberg zurück. 1709 berief ihn der preußische König Friedrich I zum Generalsuperintendent des Herzogtums Hinterpommern und des Fürstentums Cammin. Kapital mit kleiner Fehlstelle des Pergamentbezuges; eine Kante des Vorderdeckel etwas bestoßen. Sonst sehr gutes, innen ausgesprochen frisches Exemplar; Seiten sowie alle Tafeln sauber und nahezu fleckenfrei.

Gilt borders to boards. Extremities with wear, a few wormholes to spine and most of the gilt ornamentation worn off. One plate with tear and missing small part of paper in centre. Stamp to front free end-paper, otherwise internally fine and clean. (16), 1222. (50) pp. + frontiespiece and 12 plates (out of 15). First edition of David Nerreter?s translation of the Koran, which forms the second part of the present work. The translation was based on the Maracci-edition from 1696 which replaced Schweigger's earlier German translation (1616). Here Schweigger had used an flawed Italian translation from 1557, so in many ways, the present translation constitutes the first thoroughly reliable German translation of the Koran. The first part discusses the history of Islam and its customs and the second part is devoted to the translation of the Quran.
