Writer wanted every incident to be absolutely true, so she based the book upon the writings or oral testimony of the several Sager girls who survived the Whitman Massacre. The event was the climax of several years of complex interaction between the Whitmans, who had led the first wagon train along the Oregon Trail, and the local Native Americans. 221 pp.
