Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. viii, 142, 160, XLIII, errata vo Vol. III; additional errata to Vol. I and II, 25 plates. This is volume III though it is not mentioned on title page. (The first two volumes were "Results of the Meteorological Observations 1859-1862" and "Nautical Observations 1858-1862".) Spine lacking, tape ghosts on covers, corners bumped, plates 5,6,7,8 are present twice, plates 1,2,3,4 not present. Very rare publication by this German scientist after who the German "Georg von Neumayer Station" in Antarctica is named. Flagstaff Observatory, established at Flagstaff Hill in central Melbourne in 1858, was the creation of German scientist Georg Balthasar von Neumayer. He had trained as a physicist, and absorbed the current interest in terrestrial magnetism and its practical importance for navigation and exploration. Neumayer visited Victoria in 1852, and spent time as a miner at Bendigo and ship's mate on coastal vessels. While in Victoria he developed the idea of establishing a magnetic and meteorological observatory in Melbourne, applying the new sciences to virtually unexplored terrain. Flagstaff Observatory ceased its observations in November 1863, as responsibility for the magnetic and meteorological observations passed to Melbourne Observatory.
