First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Probably 1st printing, although we note that WorldCat says, "2 editions published in 1928 in English." Some refer to a 1930 publication date. WorldCat cites multiple electronic copies in libraries, but only five (5) print copies. Not reprinted. Off light yellow pictorial wraps (drawing of black man or a man in black face singing on a movie screen with an audience watching. 34pp. No illustrations. Advice re "Talkies: Promoting Song Sales," "Utility Songs," " The Theme Song," "The Mother Song," The Rustic Song," "The Irish Song,"Flirtation Songs," and many other categories. The fore edge page margins have a tidemark (waterstain) running down the edge and running just to the text. Because of the overall physical condition we are inclined, in spite of the stain, to grade this copy a vg copy. Some collectors will insist that the stain requires a lower grade. Rare.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. Soft cover booklet, stapled binding. 8vo (6.25 x 9.25 in.). Cover is a graphical rendition of Al Jolson from "The Jazz Singer" on screen with silhouetted audience. Titling in black, white. Light rub marks, one small stain. Rear cover is print-out of a small section from the inside text. There are three light stains. Lower third of the cover wrap is separated at the spine. Most pages are clean though small stains appear on the first 10 pages. This booklet is a how-to guide for songwriters and composers who are considering work in the swiftly emerging "talkies" of the late 1920s. It discusses the mechanic, aesthetic, and legal issues involved. Informative and well-written by Walter Newcomer, himself a composer. An interesting, well-preserved piece of American 20th century culture.
