The Carlisle Journal began life in 1798 and continued, with minor changes of the title, into the twentieth century. Margaret Jollie, the widow of Francis Jollie II, was in partnership with James Jollie until 1828 before trading in her own right until 1831 when she went into partnership with James Steel who eventually took over control of this newspaper in 1836.
