Single sheet, (102mm.), Letterpress and manuscript on wove paper carrying a fragment of the watermarked date of 18. Some staining. A receipt for 15 shillings and 2 pence to the Revd John Heelis of Appleby Castle and signed by John Atkinson. The Carlisle Journal began life in 1798 and continued, with minor changes of the title, into the twentieth century. Margaret Jollie, the widow of Francis Jollie II, was in partnership with James Jollie until 1828 before trading in her own right until 1831 when she went into partnership with James Steel who eventually took over control of this newspaper in 1836.
