Condition: Very good plus. University-level textbook compilation of Horace's poetry with an emphasis on the innovative metrical forms that he famously adapted from Greek lyric poetry for a new Latin style. Among the most revered of the ancient poets, Horace's influence extends even into the English language with the phrase "seize the day" (carpe diem). A contemporary of Virgil in the age of the Roman Civil Wars and the ascension of Augustus, Horace is known for his teasing distance from the solemn and noble epics of his friends, as well as his emphasis on the Golden Mean. His biggest impact, however, was in his use of meter. Especially influenced by the lyric poetry of Archilochus, Alcaeus, and Sappho, Horace transformed their often intimidatingly complex metrical forms into a new kind of Roman lyric, a dazzling display of linguistic mastery. This edition was first published in 1531 by Simon de Colines, who produced textbooks for the University of Paris for a large part of his career. The work reprints Horace's Odes, Epodes, Epistles, Satires, and Art of Poetry, with scansions before most poems and other metrical glosses added by Niccolò Perotti (1429-1480), onetime Poet Laureate of Bologna and the author of a popular Latin Grammar. A useful tool for the 16th-century student to appreciate Horace's most important contribution to poetry. 4.25'' x 2.5''. 20th-century period-style full calf ruled in blind, raised bands, gilt-rules to spine, red morocco spine label. Elaborate woodcut border to title page. Text in Latin. 176 ff. A few early ink annotations. Title page a bit soiled, infrequent faint foxing to text, a couple leaves with shallow chips not affecting text. Firm.

Third Aldine edition of this collection of the main texts on the Latin language available to the early humanists: the most important Renaissance dictionary/encyclopaedia, written by Niccolo Perroti, together with the three most important and influential classical texts on the subject by Varro, Festus and Nonius Marcellus. The greater part of this impressive Aldus edition is occupied by the Cornucopia of the Italian humanist Perotti. Written as a commentary on book I of Martial, it includes a discussion on almost every word of Martial's text and thus transcended its original ambition, becoming a standard work of reference on the Latin language. One commentator calls it "a massive encyclopaedia of the classical world. Every verse, indeed every word of Martial's text was a hook on which Perotti hung a densely woven tissue of linguistic, historical and cultural knowledge". The work was dedicated to the condottiere Federico da Montefeltro of Urbino (whose portrait was painted by Pierro della Francesco). The work was revised and expanded by Perotti's son Pyrrhus who made a number of additions of his own.The first edition of the Cornucopia was published in Venice by Paganino de Paganin in 1489; the first Aldine edition in 1499. Our edition is a page-for-page reprint of the second Aldus edition of 1513.Apart from his Cornucopia, Perotti wrote a Latin school grammar, Rudimenta Grammatices (printed by Pannartz and Sweynheim in 1473), one of the earliest and most popular Renaissance Latin grammars, which attempted to exclude many words and constructions of medieval, rather than classical, origin. Described by Erasmus as "accurate, yet not pedantic", it became a bestseller of its day, going through 117 editions. With Pomponio Leto, he produced a version of the poet Martial's Epigrammaton in the 1470s. To the Cornucopia are added the three most important classical text on the grammar and etymology of the Latin language: (1) De lingua Latina by Marcellus Terentius Varro (116-27BC), a prolific classical author of whom only two works partly survive. In this Aldus edition the known books 4-6 of his most famous work De lingua Latina are given, together with the three books De analogia, which also belong to the De lingua Latina. (2) De verborum significatione of the Roman grammarian Sextus Pompeius Festus (2nd cent. AD), an epitome in 21 books of the encyclopaedic treatise of the same name by Valerius Flaccus. Festus gives the etymology as well as the meaning of many words, and his work throws considerable light on the Latin language, mythology and antiquities of ancient Rome. Of Festus's work, only a few fragments remain in only one single manuscript (in Naples). (3) De compendiosa doctrina by the Latin grammarian and lexicographer Nonius Marcellus (end 3rd, beginning 4th cent. AD), a "lexicon" in 20 sections or chapters. The first twelve deal with language and grammar, the remaining eight with special subjects (navigation, costume, food, arms). The work is a compilation from commentaries on the authors quoted (whom Nonius only knows at second hand) and from existing dictionaries and grammars. The title page is somewhat soiled, the outer corners of the first three leaves have been reinforced, the last leaf has been mounted with preservation of the printer's device, some leaves are somewhat browned, a rust spot on col. 673. Otherwise in good condition.l Adams P-721; Ahmanson-Murphy II, 132; The Aldine press 151; Bibliotheca Aldina 34; BM STC Italian p. 499; Edit 15 CNCE 36579; OPAC SBN RMLE017412; Renouard p. 81, no. 10 & p. 63, no. 6; USTC 847581. Modern brown morocco with the author, title, and imprint lettered in gold on the spine, the year 1513 in ink on the foot edge. With a woodcut printer's device on the title page, repeated on the verso of the last leaf. Pages: 79, [1 blank] ll., "1436" [= 1426] cols. Including:(2) VARRO, Marcellus Terentius. De lingua Latina.(3) FESTUS, Sextus Pompeius. De verborum significatione.(4) MARCELLUS, Nonius. De compendiosa doctrina.

Title within decorative border. Latin text, printed in Paganini's italic type, in two enumerated columns. [50] leaves, 1268 [i.e., 1270] columns. 1 vols. Thick 4to (22 x 14 cm.). A notable book in the history of printing by the interesting printer-publisher, Alessandro Paganino of Toscolano, whose admiration for Aldus Manutius is evident in the jocular tribute to him on the title page (" non ante impressa, nisi per Aldum manutium, idq[ue] labore, et diligentia Iucundi nostri Veronensis . ). The Aldine italic type itself had become the virtual symbol of the humanistic tradition which Aldus was spreading with his cheap and handy editions; imitators and counterfeits multiplied all over Europe. Paganino was also clearly inspired by the Venetian master's innovations, but in a way which stimulated him to experiement and create in the Aldine tradition. In this innovative setting of Perotti's lexicographical commentaries on the firs book of Martial's Epigrams, follwed by similar works by various authors -- constituting a virtual encyclopedic lexicon of Latin - Paganini's design of a text displayed in enumerated columnsand lettered lines constitued a creative in the presention of a lengthy and complex text. His typeface, too, a smaller and more upright italic, is noteworthy. As Luigi Balsamo writes, "Even more interesting [among the followers of Aldus] was . printer-publisher Alessandro Paganino of Toscolano, whose admiration for Aldus became a strong stimulus to achieve something new in the field of typography. Although Brunet defined the so-called "Paganini" type as bizarre, there were actually no less than five distinct designs. They reflected the successive phases of a graphic study intended as the progressive assimilation of the Roman and italic types. Pagnini's laborious experimentation resulted in an archaic imprint that influenced not only the design of type but the entire graphic composition of the page. Indeed it was Paganini who had recognized Aldus's commitment to innovation as an example worthy of being followed.- Luigi Balsamo "Legibility and Migration," 1997. Nuovo, A. Alessandro Paganino 60; Adams; P723; BM STC Italy; p. 499 Recased in early vellum, slightly worn but sound and unwarped; title page has some minor abrasions, without loss; text is clean and fresh, a bit tight in margins; occasional marginal worming Title within decorative border. Latin text, printed in Paganini's italic type, in two enumerated columns. [50] leaves, 1268 [i.e., 1270] columns. 1 vols. Thick 4to (22 x 14 cm.).
