Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Book Club Edition. JOURNALS OF LEWIS & CLARK HERITAGE PRESS 2 VOLUMES 1962 16 FULL COLOR FULL PAGE PLATES. I was initially reluctant to offer this lovely set of books by the Heritage Press because the spines were darkened and a bit soiled. I was surprised to find that this is not an uncommon trait with this particular set. Soand once I saw the incredible full page, full color illustrations, many by Carl Bodmer, I knew someone out there would want to add these books to their collection. I am very pleased to offer: The Journals of the Expedition under the Command of Capts. Lewis and Clark, to the Sources of the Missouri, then across the Rocky Mountains and down the River Columbia to the Pacific Ocean, performed during the Years 1804-5-6 by Order of the Government of the United States edited by Nicholas Biddle and with an Introduction by John Bakeless. This large two volume set (8 x 11 ½ inches, 548 pages in total) was published by the Heritage Press of New York, dated 1962. Each of the volumes is contained in its own orange paper covered glossy slipcase. The books are bound with paper covered boards which reproduce Captain Clark s original map of their Expedition. In addition to the handsome color plates, there are a variety of other illustrations and figures, including a number of maps and also sketches by the Expedition s leaders. There is a large fold-out map of the route of the Expedition at the end of Volume I. The corresponding Sandglas of the Heritage Club (Number IV & V: 27) is laid-in. Condition: These two books are in very good condition. The slipcases show dust-dulling, especially on the top edge and some minor wear to the corners around the openings, nothing extreme. As mentioned, however, both volumes have darkened spines which also have some slight soiling. The top edge of the spine of Volume I has a small tear starting; Volume II has a small patch of finish loss at the base of the spine. I also noted some minor soiling on the lower left-hand quadrant of the cover of Volume I which mirrors a similar mark found in the Sandglas which was stored in this book s slipcase. Fortunately, that is all the bad news. Inside, the books are clean, bright and the plates stunning. All hinges are intact, and the bindings are tight, sound and square. These books are not ex-library or remainders.

Housed in a new archival mylar sleeve. Shelved Room A. HB Consignment. . This scarce Dublin edition was published shortly after Bradford and Inskeep's 1814 first edition. The two-volume set chronicles the events of the most famous exploratory voyage undertaken in the United States, and consists of the edited journals of Lewis and Clark themselves. Vol. II begins with journal entries from October 1805 and continues through the party's arrival at the Pacific ocean and subsequent return journey, ending with their ultimate arrival in St. Louis in September 1806. The full set of the Dublin edition also includes The Life of Captain Lewis by Thomas Jefferson, which appears in the first volume and is not included here. Sabin describes this work as "to-day the best work we have on the countries described," and points out that despite Paul Allen being the only editor credited in the book itself, "the work was done by Mr. Nicholas Biddle from the material left by Captain Lewis". From Wagner-Camp: "This reissue of the Bradford and Inskeep edition of 1814 was printed with larger, clearer type, thirty-two lines to the page instead of the earlier thirty-six, and contained other editorial changes. Coues considered it to be the best of the Biddle-Allen editions". References: Sabin 40831, Wagner-Camp 13:6. 1407463. Special Collections.
