Its scenic attractions and biological importance have been recognised by Tanzania's tourism master plan and national wildlife policy. At present, Mkomazi's future is uncertain. To maintain its local, national and international value, it must find ways to accommodate the needs of a rapidly expanding human population with its remarkable flora and fauna. Until now there has been little research on Mkomazi's basic ecology. Starting in 1992, the Tanzanian Department of Wildlife and the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) undertook a five-year study of the Reserve. The findings are presented here, with detailed studies of Mkomazi's physical, biological and ecological attributes as well as two associated studies of pastoral and agricultural activities on the Reserve's margins. The result is one of the most detailed descriptions of an African savanna to be published. Our purpose here is to provide information for the planning and management of Mkomazi, as well as for those visiting the reserve and those with a wider interest in African savanna landscapes. -- Contents: Introduction; I. Ecology and Biodiversity [Climate of Mkomazi: Variability and Importance; Soil Geochemical Mapping; Ecological Mapping of a Semi-Arid Savanna]; - Vegetation: - [Flora and Its Regional Context; Checklist of Vascular Plants and Pteridophytes; Vegetation and Habitats; Phenological Observations on the Vegetation; Effects of Fire on Shrub Survival]; - Arthropods: - [Invertebrate Biodiversity; Spiders (Arachnida); Cicadas (Hemiptera, Homoptera: Cicadoidea); Lacewings (Neuroptera); Beetles (Coleoptera); Hangingflies (Mecoptera: Bittacidae); Asilids (Diptera: Asilidae); Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea and Papilionoidea); Fig Wasps (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Agaonidae) and Fig Trees (Ficus); Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae); Pollination Ecology of Acacia Species; Ants, Pollinators and Acacias; Arthropod Diversity and the Tree Flora; Interaction of Crematogaster Ants and Acacia Trees]; - Vertebrates: - Amphibians; Reptiles; Birds; Checklist of Birds; Is Mkomazi as a Potential Reservoir of Avian Crop Pests?; Hornbills as a Case Study of Resource Partitioning; Small Mammals; Large Mammals; Checklist of Mammals]; II.
