Based on interviews with family and friends, and Crowhurst's logbook, this account of the stress that prompted him to deceive the world and suffer a mental breakdown formed the basis of the movie The Mercy, starring Colin Firth. It reveals how he managed to fool the world that he was circling the globe when really, he never made it past the Atlantic. The strain of his deception,the strain of being eight months alone at sea destroyed his sanity and finally ended his life. It remains one the greatest sea dramas of the 20th century.
