Muy buen ejemplar.- // Refs.: Caillet, 996.- // La primera obra impresa (anónimamente) de Proudhon, donde estudió la que también había sido la primera obra publicada de otro nativo de Besançon, como él, quien fuera el azote del deismo, la filosofía natural y el materialismo, el abbé Bergier. Si el abbé Bergier, antes de sentirse obligado a la apología de la religión católica, había publicado sus Elemens primitifs des langues en 1764(1), Proudhon, antes de verse urgido a la intervención social se interesó inicialmente por la lingüística, escribiendo este Essai de grammaire générale como un avance sobre los estudios de Bergier. La obra, que Proudhon encargó imprimir al taller de Lambert en Besançon, se publicó con cubiertas de la propia imprenta. No se vendió apenas y buena parte de la edición se liquidó al peso. En 1850 la encontró el librero Turbergue quien, sabiendo que estaba escrita por quien en esa fecha era el ya famoso Proudhon, la vendió con cubiertas sin fecha impresas con el nombre de su librería. Con su ensayo, Proudhon pretendía hacer explícito el proceso evolutivo por el que se habían diversificado las lenguas a partir de un tronco común mediante la comparación de sus estructuras sintácticas y sintagmáticas, porque le parecía que los argumentos propuestos por Bergier y Cour de Gobelin tres cuartos de siglo antes eran insuficientes. Entirely devoted to the regeneration of English Catholicism, his "Speeches ." were harnessed with contemporary science in order to reconcile the most eminent spirits of its country with orthodox theology. Pronounced during the Lent of 1835 the «Conferences on the relationship between science and the revealed religion» were published in 1836 in English in London. They touch linguistics, the ethnography but also geology and are the alive illustration of an scientifico-apologetic paradigm in the social sciences of first half of 19th century.
