Delve into the treacherous religious landscape of 16th-century France with this captivating account of the bloody conflicts between Catholics and Huguenots. The author meticulously chronicles the unfolding events, providing an intimate glimpse into the political machinations and personal dramas that shaped this tumultuous era. From the 1561 Edict of Pacification to the infamous 1572 St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, the book offers a nuanced perspective on the complexities of religious persecution and the human cost of war. Through detailed descriptions of battles, negotiations, and the shifting allegiances of key figures, the author illuminates the intricate web of power struggles and ideological clashes that fueled the conflict. This book serves as an essential resource for understanding the profound impact of religious strife on the course of French history. This book, an anonymous critique of the Catholic Church in the 16th century, details the corruption and mismanagement of ecclesiastical finances. The author, clearly an informed critic of the Church, presents an in-depth analysis of the problem. This book supports its claims by offering statistics and a detailed breakdown of the Church's income and expenses. Throughout, the author argues that the Church has strayed from its mission and become more concerned with material wealth than spiritual matters, leading to moral decay and widespread financial mismanagement. The author's insights make this book an important historical document for understanding the religious and social issues of the time. Hardcover. Condition: Fine condition. First edition limited to 100 copies. 41/100 Signed on colophon. Miniature book (1 3/8 x 1 1/8"). 2 leaves, 45pp., 1 leaf Original red leather with gilt decor and ruling on covers, gilt lettering and decorative ruling on spine. Gilt top edge. Marbled endpapers. Color-illustrated title page. Rendered into Latin verse by Nicholas Barnaud Delphinas. Illustrated with two color lithographs on title page and preface, one in b/w and fifteen emblematic plates in color lithography in the text. Preface: "I am called Lambspring, born of a noble family, and this crest I bear with glory and justice." "The Book of Lambspring is well known as one of the gems from the Musaeum Hermeticum published in 1625 by Lucas Jennis in Frankfurt, especially for its series of fifteen emblematic plates. It seems that this little book was first published under the title "De Lapide Philosophico Triga Chemicum (Prague 1599) compiled by the Frenchman Nicolas Barnaud, prominent in the alchemical circles around Rudolf II. The Book of Lambspring is a work of spiritual alchemy, has few references to physical alchemical processes, and it seems unlikely that it could ever have provided clues that might help someone engaged upon physical experimentation. Instead, it is a clear, powerful and extremely useful statement of the inner work of the spiritual alchemist." (Adam McLean).

First Edition
Couverture rigide. Condition: Très bon. Edition originale. In-8 (135 x 88 mm), 4 ff. n. ch., 170 pp., 2 ff. n. ch. Brunet IV, 599. Graesse, II, 380. Index Aureliensis, 113.184. Bietenholz, Basle and France in the Sixteenth Century, Droz, 1971, p. 119.
