Hardcover. Condition: New copies. Illustrated. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Brand new hardcover book! Limited to only 100; Springville history enthusiast Roger B. Nielson has produced another publication regarding Utah's frontier period. His latest book, "Utah's Black Hawk Veterans," details the names of those who served in that Indian War and how long they served and where. The book provides answers to those questions and many others regarding the Black Hawk veterans. "Much has been written in pioneer histories, journals and diaries about that particular Indian War, but few details have been recorded about exactly who served, when they served, where they served and how long they served," said Nielson. This new publication answers all those questions he said. Nielson has a passion for learning about Mormon and Utah frontier history and when he discovered an obscure government publication regarding expenses incurred during the Black Hawk War of 1865-67, he started his research which led to this book. "The purpose of this book is to make known the names and services rendered by the pioneer participants to all those who may be wondering if their ancestors took part in this conflict," said Nielson. Nielson said that the Utah Territorial Legislature compiled an exact listing of veterans in the various militia companies involved in the war, their wartime expenses, along with verified names of individual members, and submitted the document to the U. S. Congress in 1868, requesting compensation for expenses incurred during the war. That request was never funded by Congress. All expenses were therefore borne by the territory and the individual veterans. Nielson said that recognition of the veterans' service began as annual reunions in 1893. By 1905 the state began legislation to present medals to all who served in all the conflicts. Individually named medals were presented to all surviving veterans or their families in 1906. Pensions for services rendered were awarded beginning about 1918."No listing of veterans by nane was ever published," said Nielson. Several Indian Wars or conflicts occurred in the Utah Territory between 1850 and 1867. These were named after the Indian leaders as in the Black Hawk War. Each outbreak was suppressed by militia companies from settlements within the territory. No U. S. Soldiers were ever involved. "Fortunately, most of the conflicts were short-lived, lasting from a few months to perhaps a year," said Nielson. The longest was the Black Hawk War, which lasted three years and involved large areas of the territory and many militia companies." Nielson was born in Moroni, Utah, in 1939 and moved to Utah Valley during World War II, being raised in Provo, Mapleton and Springville. He graduated from Springville High School in 1957 and BYU in 1962 with a degree in chemistry. He worked a chemist and lab supervisor in the solid propellant industry until he retired in 1992 and returned to Springville. He married the former Nancy Stewart of Provo in 1959 and they have eight children. Nielson's first book was "Roll Call at Old Camp Floyd, Utah Territory," published in 2006."Utah's Black Hawk Veterans" is a hard-bound book, 473 pages, with special hand-stitching for durability. ; 8.5" x 11"; 473 pages;
