This charming book is about how people lived during those times. How did it feel like being forbid- den to read Rizal's Noli and evacuating from spot to spot during the Revolu- tion? How much was a live chicken in 1900? a cavan of rice? the rent of a two-story house? Did you know that Manila entertainment included a (very inferior) bullfight? Many of the things we now take for granted were first introduced during the era the Philippine flag, ice cream, the motor car, the Padre Faura barometer, the telephone (you'll even know who got telephone number "1").
