The study of popular prints and imagery has seen increased development in Europe since the 1960s especially in Germany and Scandinavia. A first attempt to bring together European scholars around the theme of mass-distributed pictures was held by Sociéte Internationale d´Ethnologie et de Folklore (SIEF) in Lund, Sweden in 1984. In October 2000 the sixth conference, focusing on Popular Prints and Imagery, was organized by the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities and the publisher Natur & Kultur. In this volume 22 ethnologists and art historians from 11 different countries publish their contributions. The richly illustrated volume contains studies of pictures from the sixteenth century until today from Italy to Norway, from Holland to Russia. Some papers sketch the historical background, others give national examples of different kinds of production. Many others deal with motif studies and iconographical aspects. Together the papers, written in English and German, cover a broad field of research. The volume is edited by Nils-Arvid Bringéus and Sten Åke Nilsson, professors emeriti and fellows of the Royal Academy of Letters.

Stockholm, The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, 2017. 26 x 21 cms. 192 pp. Richly illustrated in colour, including reproductions of the hand-coloured engraved plates from the rare original edition of 1786. 68-page introduction by Sten-Åke Nilsson, formerly professor of art history at Lund University. First edition in English of Ehrensvärd's text, dedicated to The Royal Academy of Fine Arts on the occasion of its 250th anniversary. Translation by Alan Crozier, with extensive introduction and appendix in English by Sten Åke Nilsson. - - - "Carl August Ehrensvärd was an admiral and head of the Swedish navy during the reign of Gustav III. He is best known today as a draughtsman, architect, and author. His artist friends included the painter Elias Martin and the sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel. Ehrensvärd was a dedicated neoclassicist who viewed Greek Doric architecture as the ideal model. During his Grand Tour he devoted special study to the temple sites of Paestum and Agrigento in Sicily. Ehrensvärd's programmatic work, Journey to Italy 1780, 1781, 1782, is presented here for the first time in English translation with a detailed commentary by Sten Åke Nilsson, professor emeritus of Art History, Lund University".
