First edition. Octavo. vii, [1, blank], 159, [1 printer's slug] pp. plus two folding charts. Errata tipped in at rear. Original calf with double gilt fillet borders, spine smooth and with gilt lettering, marbled endpapers. Some light rubbing to extremities, purple stamp of "Island Hermitage Library" of Dodanduwa (crossed out and deaccessioned) and well as a stamp for the Buddha-Haus bookstore in Germany. Same Hermitage stamp again on the front blank (all crossed out). Aside from the stamps a tight and clean copy in the original binding. This copy inscribed by the author, N.P. Nimalasuria, to Sister Nippalauranna. The author lays out the revered tenets of Theravada Buddhism, its oldest expression. The Island Hermitage is located in Ratgama Lake, a salt-water lagoon about 65 miles from Colombo. While this book was printed in English the hermitage has very strong ties to Germany. It was founded in 1911 by Anton Walther Florus Gueth of Germany, who became one of the earliest Westerners in modern times to become a Bhikkhu, a fully ordained Buddhist monk. The Island Hermitage was the first centre of Theravada Buddhist study and practice set up by and for Westerners. Its residents, monks and laymen, studied Theravada Buddhism and the Pali language, made translations of The Pali Canon, wrote books on Theravada Buddhism and practiced meditation. Among the early Western residents were the Venerables Vappo, Mahanama, Assaji and Bhaddiya (all Germans). Twice the monks at the Hermitage were interred (during WWI & WWII( but after each imprisonment they returned and rebuilt the monastery. One of the most notable aspects of the library is that it has amassed a collection of the P li Canon in six different scripts i.e. Sinhalese, Thai, Burmese, Devanagari, Roman and German. In 1951 Nyanatiloka moved to the Forest Hermitage in Kandy, then joined by Nyanaponika. Since 2003, the hermitage has been run by a group of young Sri Lankan monks.
