This book is an urgent plea from a musician who fears that the contemporary pursuit of virtuosity in classical music performances is leading to dishonest and inauthentic interpretations, and that it degrades the art form. The author decries the "mercantilism" in art, referring to the way that artistic success and popularity are now being driven by the performer's ability to showcase superficial, flashy, demanding, and technically complex musical skills via virtuoso performances, and is resulting in a distorted impression of the 'true' music itself. The author also laments the acceptance of a shallow public appreciation for music that is devoid of depth or complexity and is, ultimately, unfulfilling to musician and listener alike. This book laments the art of classical music as it was and still could be, and grieves the evolution that has edged it towards a focus on showmanship and away from emotive depth. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

This book, a collection of essays on music, art, and culture, delves into the complex relationship between the artist, their craft, and the ever-changing demands of society. The author, a respected critic and scholar, argues that true artistic greatness transcends the pursuit of fame or fortune and instead finds its source in a deep reverence for the creative process and a commitment to serving the art form itself. Through thought-provoking reflections on the works of Bach, Beethoven, and other masters, the book challenges the superficiality of contemporary artistic culture and explores the essential qualities that distinguish enduring masterpieces from fleeting trends. The author's insights on the nature of inspiration, the role of tradition in artistic innovation, and the importance of artistic integrity make this book a valuable resource for musicians, artists, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the creative process. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
