Soft cover. Condition: Good. Temporary wartime newspaper issued in Beirut in the midst of the Lebanon Crisis. Broadsheet 41x58cm, 2pp single leaf printed to both sides on wartime economy paper. Produced by British Army Public Relations (Ninth Army). Printed and published by the Ninth Army by courtesy of the Eastern Times, Place des Canons, Beirut. Good only, tanned, folded into quarters, with nicks to the edges and a little loss (not affecting content). An extremely rare survivor with Worldcat recording unidentified issues at the Bibliotheque nationale de France only (OCLC 474219786). Not recorded on Library Hub. The Ninth Army was formed out of HQ British Troops Palestine and Transjordan in 1941 to assume command of the Allied Forces in Syria, Lebanon and northern Iraq. It was at this time commanded by Lieutenant General W.G. Holmes. Dated 17 November 1943, this newspaper was issued during the unrest following the Lebanese proclamation of independence (8 November). The French responded by dissolving Parliament and arresting political leaders (11 November). This triggered a national uprising. Following British intervention, the French released their captives and independence was formally declared on 22 November. This issue reprints a letter from Holmes dated 16 November to The Eastern Times' Proprietor requisitioning his offices and machinery "for the duration of the present crisis" to print a daily newspaper to report on home and world news to British troops "until such time as 'The Eastern Times' reappears". Another note thanks The Eastern Times, promising to "give the facts day by day. There will be no controversy and no propaganda" (p1). This therefore includes news on the status of the Lebanese unrest including British Minister R.G. Casey's visit to General Catroux, referring to "the controversy between the Lebanese Government and the French authorities over the constitutional question". Further news on page 1 includes the headline story "Fall of Korosten Imminent" on the Red Army's progress taking the Ukrainian railway hub during the Kiev Offensive with map; heavy fighting in Isernia, Italy; Allied air operations in Burma, northern France, Norway, SW Pacific, and Ruhr; and Indians in Italy. Page 2 offers recreational and cultural content on ancient Phoenicia, Sinbad (a pseudonym for a hard living sailor enjoying bars and plenty of girls in every port), Jeff's Cookery Nook (recipes for Scotch Parkins, Xmas cake, and banana mincemeat), sport including Beirut Services football and hockey, lessons from 1918 and Mussolini's fall.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). pp.[vi] (Title and Contents), plus pp.[ii] Errata plus iii-xv (The Bedouins of Northern Arabia by Lt. Col. J.B. Glubb) and pp.186. Original blue printed paper wrappers, rubber stamped 102 and in red "This Document will be kept under lock and key when not in actual use". Ownership inscription of "P.M. Holt/28.0.59/Hastings"* A fascinating handbook on the tribal peoples of Syria, with a remarkable folding map of 'The Arab Tribes in Syria', a French map overprinted with the tribes' names and their Summer and Winter locations. The handbook was compiled by the British 'Ninth Army' which occupied Syria and Lebanon after the allied defeat of Vichy France in 1941. An official publication, it was issued for a limited readership: "This document is the property of H.B.M. Government, and is issued for the information of officers and responsible officials." Most surviving copies show signs of official ownership and this is no different, with sporadic manuscript annotations updating the intelligence. Uncommon. LibraryHub lists three holdings in the UK, at SOAS, the British Museum and Oxford. OCLC adds six holdings, at the American University in Beirut, Princeton, Duke University, NYU Abu Dhabi, Monash University and Keio University. *Peter Malcolm Holt (1918 -2006) eminent historian of the Middle East and Sudan and a founding editor of the Cambridge History of Islam.
