Published by Sebastianum Henricpetri[ Sebastian Heinrich Petri], 1595
Couverture rigide. Sebastianum Henricpetri [ Sebastian Heinrich Petri] | Basileae [Bâle] 1595 | (20p.) 1626 col. (11p.) (Brunet IV-84). | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Basel edition, completed and expanded by Basile Zanchi, Marcello Squarcialupi and Caellii Secundi Curionis. Printer's device (allegorical forge scene) in medallion on the title page and large vignette on the verso of the last leaf, with the same motif within a Renaissance frame composed of allegorical figures. Several initials, one headpiece and one tailpiece. Lexical concordance originally published in 1535 under the title Observationes in M. Tullium Ciceronem Text in Latin in two columns of 85 lines. Later full cardboard binding, worn: the spine is missing. Paper reinforcement in margin on verso of title page. Corner lack filled at leaf 1-2 in upper margin with small text damage. Some pale dampstains, foxing. Paper browning characteristic of German and Swiss papers of this period. Like the Tabula Aurea (golden table) of Bergama for the work of Thomas Aquinas, the Thesaurius Ciceronianus is the indispensable lexicon for reading Cicero's enormous corpus and the essential element for its study, particularly for teaching it. The Renaissance found its great classic in Cicero, it would exhume manuscripts and editions would abound; he is the least contested and most studied Latin author, both by the religious and civil worlds, hence the necessity of this decisive lexicon for the correct reading of his work. "This work, of great utility for understanding Cicero, first appeared under the title Observationes in Ciceronem, ex Prato Albuini (Brixiae), 1535." (Brunet IV-84). * in-folio (20,5x33cm).

Woodcut printer's device of Winter (Minerva holding head of Medusa and spear, with owl at her feet) to title and final verso. Full period German pigskin, stamped in blind, lacking clasps; lightly toned, some underlining, otherwise crisp and clean, binding somewhat rubbed and dated in ink on front cover "DICTIONARIVM MDXLIIII [1544]." 17th-century ownership inscription to title "Samuel M[.] Elbing." At once in the collection of a religious fraternity with their emblem gilt-stamped to front cover "Ecce quam bonum et quam iucundum habitare fratres in unum"(Latin, from Psalm 133) and dated 1604. Nizzoli's Latin dictionary of 1544, published in response to Estienne's edition. A rare early edition of this great monument of Renaissance humanist scholarship first published in 1535. Mario Nizzoli, or Marius Nizolius as he was known in Latin, was a professor at the University of Parma and an expert Latin lexicographer. In 1520, he published his chief work, the Thesaurus Ciceronianus, which had first appeared as Observationes in Ciceronem in 1535, documenting approximately 20,000 words. Nizzoli dared to publish an augmented version of Robert Estienne's Linguae latinae thesaurus in Venice in 1550-51 and inspection of this edition in press enraged Robert, who recognized some of the added words as ones which he carefully identified as to be omitted from his dictionary and counterfeit or post-classical. The work also includes a biographical note to Italian cardinal Giovanni Francesco Gambara (1533-1587).

Double columns, numbered to 1498; some worming most severe last quarter of text block, toned throughout. Preliminary leaves inscribed in 17th century hand in Latin and title similarly inscribed with ownership inscriptions to title. Nizzoli's chief work, a Latin glossary of words matched with Ciceronian equivalents Mario Nizzoli (1498-1576), or Marius Nizolius as he was known in Latin, was a professor at the University of Parma and one of the staunchest defenders of a strict Ciceronian imitation. His lexicon of Latin was based exclusively on the writings of Cicero and is regarded as ". one of the best known dictionaries from the 16th well into the 18th century (an edition was printed in England as late as in 1820). Leibniz wrote that this Lexicon would last as long as Cicero. The historian Arnold Toynbee has remarked that he was brought up on Nizolius in Latin school." (from "The Observationes in M. T. Ciceronem of Marius Nizolius" by Quirinus Breen /Studies in the Renaissance, Vol. 1, 1954 (1954), pp. 49-58). Nizzoli stood for the strictest kind of verbal imitation of Cicero an arranged his dictionary for the use of youth who aspired to attain the perfect style. This copy survives in good form in a wonderful period German binding of which others of the same style have been located.

First Edition
First Edition. First edition under the editorship of Jac. Facciolati, folio, pp. [8], 760, [4], 887, [1]; title page printed in red and black, text in double column; full contemporary sheep, gilt spine in 7 compartments, raised bands, tan gilt-lettered calf spine label (partially perished), all edges red, marbled endpapers; boards quite scuffed and worn, spine gilt rubbed; contemporary bookseller ticket on front pastedown, textblock about fine. In this volume are joined some of the great names in the history of Renaissance and post-Renaissance classical scholarship; Nizzoli, Alexander Scot, Estienne Dolet and Jacopo Facciolati. Nizzoli's 'Observationes in Ciceroem,' first published in 1535, was recast several times and finally published by Alexander Scot as 'Lexicon Ciceroniaum,' and the title was adopted by Facciolati (1682-1769) for the present edition. His name does not appear on the title, but both introductions are signed by him. He no longer follows, he says, Nizzoli's system of page citations (of the Aldine edition) but prefers to use the sub-division of Cicero's works established by Alexander Scot. At the end, with a second introduction is Facciolati's much corrected and augmented version of Dolet's (1509-1546) 'Formulae linguae latinae elegantiores,' first published in 1539. Graesse IV, p. 680; Vancil, p. 176.

333 x 216 mm. (13 1/8 x 8 1/2"). 8 p.l., 3096 columns [misnumbered; actually 2192 columns, or 1096 pp.], [6] leaves. Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over substantial bevelled wooden boards, covers with concentric frames formed by thick and thin rules and three decorative rolls, one featuring sheaves of grain, one with medallions and foliage, and one with four portraits (the Madonna and Child, David, Isaiah, and Paul), the latter signed with the initials "MB" and dated 1553; raised bands, ink titling on spine, lower third of spine painted red with library shelf location in black, remnants of two clasps. With printer's device on title page and in colophon, and with historiated woodcut initial. Front pastedown with ink inscription "Approbatus ['Approved by censor'] / 1578"; title page and introduction with printer's name and editor's name scratched out in ink, presumably by the censor (the obliterated words helpfully written in by a subsequent user); title page with ink ownership inscription of the Jesuit College in Innsbruck, dated 1563. Not in Adams or Schweiger. For the binding: Haebler I, 60. âThin eight-inch crack to the middle of front joint, general rubbing and a few scratches to boards and extremities (wood exposed at corners), leaves a shade less than bright, with occasional minor tears, browning, stains, or foxing, but still an excellent copy, the text generally quite clean and fresh, and the pleasing contemporary binding with no fatal defect. First published in 1535 under the title "Observationes in Ciceronem" and appearing in its present form in 1548, this massive work of erudition doesn't function like a modern thesaurus to find alternatives to pedestrian words or to help avoid repetition, but rather as a dictionary of words used by Cicero in his works. "Iuba," for example, might stump some scholars, but Nizzoli is standing by to tell us (in Latin, of course) that "iuba" is the hair that hangs from the necks of horses. Then, after the definition (as in the case of all the other words), Nizzoli quotes phrases from different works of Cicero in which "iuba" appears. To create such a work required an extraordinary effort, and the title page tells us that the augmenting of it by a fourth part was itself a Herculean labor. Like his beloved Cicero, Mario Nizzoli (1498-1566) was a humanist philosopher, and went so far as to denounce Saint Thomas Aquinas and other scholastics for their "monstrous ideas and barbarous [and of course un-Ciceronian] language." The names of our printer Johan Herwagen and our editor, the Italian Protestant theologian Celio Secondo Curio (1503-69), have been blacked out by the censor, perhaps a Jesuit displeased with their Protestant affiliations. Haebler suggests that our binder, "M.B.," is from Wittenberg, although he hesitates to identify him as the Wittenberger Matthias Bethinichen.
