Maroon boards with silver spine and cover lettering and decoration. Signs of cover edge and cover wear. Back hinge, while still tight, shows wear at top and bottom of spine. area. There is a barely noticeable rippling effect to some pages which indicates the possibility of moisture exposure. Exposure was probably not direct as there are no stains or other evidence but possibly results from storage room high humidity. This issue, 1983, was the last NMSU yearbook entitled Swastika, a tradition that began in 1907. Since 1939 and the era of Nazi Germany the name was a recurring source of controversy. There is a two page article beginning on page 14 by Douglas Wright that recounts the long-running issues that led up to the NMSU Board of Regents 1983 action that ordered an end to the traditional name and that a new one be found. At long last the controversy was laid to rest. There are hundreds of photographs of people and activities throughout with many in color. Names abound with the usual headshots of students for each of the four class years.
