Da Heidegger in poi, i filosofi si sono spesse volte rammaricati del fatto che un tale orientamento abbia condott…o allo scacco dell'ontologia stessa. Ma che succederebbe se l'ontologia non partisse più dall'alto, da un Empireo dell'essere, ma dal basso? È ciò che si chiede Noica, in un trattato che racchiude trent'anni di riflessione filosofica. Partire dal basso può significare, innanzi tutto, restituire un tono più umile a una simile riflessione, nell'ultimo secolo sempre più impallidita di fronte ai successi della ricerca scientifica. Quest'ultima, difatti, ha saputo dissertare di più e meglio sui vari aspetti della filosofia tradizionale, screditando la filosofia stessa e la sua secolare autorità. L'unico dominio non ancora nominalmente affetto da scientismo è quello dell'essere in quanto tale: e, proprio per questo, di tutte le forme filosofiche possibili l'ontologia sembra presentarsi come quella dotata di maggior senso attuale. Ma se l'ontologia verrà reinaugurata 'dal basso', la contemplazione dell'essere non potrà non avere inizio e fine che nel quotidiano intramondano, nella datità delle cose che sono. È da queste premesse che si sviluppa il discorso noichiano, fondato su un severo richiamo al compito essenziale e sfuggente della filosofia: il poter dire che ogni cosa è nella misura in cui è, e il comprendere il mondo nella doppia accezione del capirlo e dell'avvolgerlo.
