No. 70 Squadron had been based in the Middle East since 1 Feb 1920, relocating between Egypt, Iraq, Libya and Tunisia before arriving in Nicosia in 1955. In addition to providing transport, evacuation and ambulance functions, it had been responsible for maintaining the Cairo-Baghdad airmail route created by the RAF in the 1920s. Its 40th Anniversary celebrations included a training flight over Cyprus, and cutting a Squadron crest shaped cake in the presence of local journalists. This striking image looks down on to one of its Handley Page Hastings C1s (TG523) as it flies over Kyrenia's ruggedly picturesque harbour.
