Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Condition: Good. End papers have a border of leaves and tendrils over a lilac background the same color as the cloth cover. The inside of the book is in good condition, with just a few pages having pencil marks (not underlining or notations). A number of pages have small dog ears at top or bottom, but no tears. On the back end paper someone has written in pencil the quotation about love being a divine martyrdom. The bookplate of the previous owner has been glued down, causing the page to pucker. Both front and back covers are faded and spotted, with corner and spine bumping. This is the original book. Dedication page: To all those who understand [followed by a quotation from Song of Solomon: This is my beloved, and this is my friend. AUTHOR'S NOTE: 'THIS faithful record of a great love is now being given to the public, because the author, in all humility, imagines it may perhaps help other lovers who have had to face the same problem. Great love almost invariably means great sorrow; therefore as the book is only meant for those who 'understand,' the author makes no apology for the note of sadness that so often recurs in these pages. 'To love is not a game, it is a divine martyrdom.' One might first think that this is a woman's version of the love that dare not speak its name, the Victorian phrase describing homosexual affairs of the heart and body. The author of TO MY BELOVED, THE HEART LETTERS OF A WOMAN is of necessity anonymous upon the book's publication in 1914, but rather than writing a series of passionate letters to another woman, she is writing to a man who had once embraced her and professed his undying love. As a married woman and a mother, she dare only dream and fantasize rather than act impulsively. The man will do nothing to lure her away, so the affair remains platonic, but no less deeply heartfelt. There are certain indications of the two of them being members of England's upper class (think DOWNTON ABBEY) and thus very careful about not causing any scandals. When the writer goes to Egypt with her husband for a long vacation, she is delighted when the other man eventually joins the party. Together they can have moonlit camel rides on the desert, satisfied with a simple caress or even a kiss, only the second one in their friendship. Somehow the author maintains a passionately felt correspondence without falling too deeply into purple passages. I can find nothing on the internet which explains who the anonymous writer was. One could almost assume she (or he) was a well established author who was able to maintain secrecy right on the cusp of World War I. Or perhaps she was wealthy and powerful and would sue anyone revealing her identity. Hopefully the mystery will be solved one day.
