[This was the Medal that President Jefferson authorized Lewis & Clark to give to important American Indian leaders they met on the expedition, as tokens of distinction and allegiance]. The main volume is illustrated with a full color frontispiece by Karl Bodmer, two different endpaper maps (by William Clark), and numerous facsimiles of original expedition drawings and manuscripts.
