First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First Edition. Octavo: 300 p. with a frontispiece and numerous textual illustrations. Original mint cloth binding, with pictorial white, black, and brown stamping. Period ink gift inscription to the front flyleaf. A bit of mild rubbing to the boards; otherwise very good. Three decades after the death of the Rev. Jacob Abbott, author of the morally instructive and highly popular Rollo books for young people, an obscure Chicago publisher sought to capitalize on the lasting popularity of the Rollo's Tour of Europe series with a new volume. Today, Rollo in Hawaii is remembered for three things: its role as the first boys' adventure book to be set entirely in Hawaii; as an early example of surfing literature; and as a "lost race" tale, in which the protagonists discover a people who have been out of contact with the rest of the world for at least a generation. In this case, Rollo and his companion stumble upon Emerald Valley, an isolated location on the island of Hawai'i with a miraculously preserved population of pre-contact native Hawaiians.
