Otoliths are calcareous concretions in the inner ear of fishes, which have a static-acoustic function. They can be found in all fishes, with the exception of shark and rays. Each species can be characterised by its otoliths and, therefore, they allow identification of the fish from which they were derived. Fossil otoliths or spe…cimens found in stomach content of predators or in sea bottom sediments can only be reliably identified, depending on the quality and size of the reference collection (otoliths sampled from well-identified fish). The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences holds one of the best otolith collections worldwide, hence it is only just that such a documentation should be made availablr to researchers and all those interested in fishes of the North Sea. The present atlas provides a pictorial guide of almost all bony fishes on the Belgian coast and adjacent areas, i.e., the North Sea and the English Channel. They represent 124 species, regularly occuring in at least a part of the studied area. A further 107 species have only sporadically been documented in the area, especially in its northern or southern parts. Each plate is accompanied by a short text, outlining the morphology of the otoliths and the geographic and bathymetric distribution of the species as well as by an illustration of the fish in question. 278 pp., 107 b/w plates, br. 4.
