Paperback. Condition: As New. Unread and unopened!(Hard to list as 'New' when it's 22 years old). Hilaire Belloc was not only a gifted writer, he was also a courageous and energetic advocate of the Christian Cause in the world. He was a man who made many enemies, simply because he refused to remain silent on the terrible evils of the modern world; he made many more friends precisely because he was a renowned lover of Truth. Sadly, too few Catholics these days know that he was a wonderful exponent of Catholic Social Teaching, an exposition that is to be found in his books, The Servile State, The Restoration of Property and Economics for Helen. Together, they provide a complete analysis of the materialist economic creeds of the modern world, as well as a broad outline blueprint for a return to social and economic sanity. That blueprint has become known as Distributism in the English-speaking world, and is a direct heir of the Social Encyclicals of the Popes. Why have we not all heard of Distributism? Let Renee Hayes, writing in his booklet, Hilaire Beloc ( 1953), explain: "Distributism advocates various means of distributing ownership in land, shops, and collective enterprises, and postulates that there will be no middle way for the future between general small ownership and general (unlabelled) industrial slavery. Some of these theories were already distastefully familiar in the peaceful, safe, comfortable educated England of forty years ago, as formulated and iterated from the Marxist point of view; notably those concerned with the exploitation of the weak, the meaninglessness of political liberty without economic power, and the complete inadequacy of the liberal tradition to handle industrial problems: That they should be put forward from afresh angle, by a man bred up in the Christian tradition and indeed appealing to it, outraged all those who had quietly accepted the belief that their country, "broadening down from precedent to precedent" was the leader of mankind in its inevitable progress to perfection. The theories and the proposals were received with that thick, mufjling, stifling silence which is the most potent and most infuriating of all defences against unwelcome argument". In other words, he hit the nail on the head, and the enemy had no answers. Thus, they remained in silence and waited for the arguments to be lost with the passage of time. Yet Truth always outs! It may take months, years, even decades, but Truth ultimately triumphs because it possesses a compulsion and a dynamism that a Lie can never have. In these days of interminable crisis - social and economic - Economics For Helen is a breath of fresh air, a whiff of a new and Christian society, a programme and a vision. In a word, it gives answers that appeal to Commonsense, Sanity and Truth. It is, therefore, a dangerous book in a world dominated by Liars.

Paperback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. A limited reprinting of T. S. Eliot's preface to Charles Claye's play 'The Merry Masque', a nearly unknown piece of his writing. A limited edition of one hundred and fifty numbered copies, this copy being number 90.In the publisher's original stapled wraps, with an adhered dust wrapper (unpriced). This preface was unknown until Stanley Revell, a book collector, discovered it in a Cornwall bookshop. It was written, however never officially published, to introduce'The Merry Masque of Our Lady in London Town', a play produced by Charles A. Claye in 1928 that performed into the 1950s.The title refers to the lack of this preface's mention in Donald Gallup's bibliography of Eliot. This unique piece of Eliot's writing foreshadows his interest in religious and poetic drama, with his 'Dialogue on Dramatic Poetry' publishing that same year. In the publisher's original stapled wraps, with an adhered dust wrapper (unpriced).Externally, excellent, with minor bumping to the edges of the dust wrapper only. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Fine. None (illustrator). book.
