Ludovicus Nonnius, a friend of Rubens- who painted his portrait, now in British National Gallery- descended from converted Portugese jews ( maranos ) who had fled to Antwerp. His non latinised name was Luis Nuñez. He dedicated his book to Nicolas Rockox, burgomaster of Antwerp and also friend of Rubens. Nonnius was a 17th century humanist. His main occupation was medicine. He published one of the first books on dietetics. With Rubens , Justus Lipsius and Rockox he shared the interest in Classical Antiquity and numismatics. This book, consisting of three parts ; Julius Caesar, Augustus and Tiberius is based on Hubert Gotlzius' work on the same subject. This is the first edition. A second edition was published in 1644 by Balthasar Plantin Moretus.
