0. Secunda Editio et Auctior. 4° Frontispiz (Kupfer) - Figuren aus der römischen Mythologie, 526 Seiten. OPergamenteinband. Bookplate, small owner's note on the flyleaf, clean and beautifully preserved. The author, Ludovicus Nonnius, was an important Flemish physician and humanist, known for his writings on dietetics, the study of healthy nutrition and lifestyle. He was strongly influenced by ancient medicine. This is an important and comprehensive work on nutrition and dietetics. The book deals with the effects of food on the human body. It is one of the earliest examples of scientifically based nutritional literature and was of considerable importance for medical practice in the early modern period. Additional chapters or revised content were likely added to the second, expanded edition (as here). The depiction in the engraving is allegorical and presumably depicts medicine personified (the figure in the center with the caduceusa symbol of the healing arts). The surrounding figures probably symbolize different food groups or seasons, such as grains, fish, grapes, and vegetables. Latein/Altgriech. 1,000 gr.
