Norberto Bobbio (1909-2004) fue uno de los más influyentes filósofos del Derecho en el mundo latino del siglo xx, y también la conciencia civil y laica de la Italia republicana. En particular, Bobbio fue también el punto de referencia para el más joven Gregorio Peces-Barba (1938-2012), también él filósofo del Derecho. En política ambos militaban en el ámbito socialista: Gregorio Peces- Barba, como diputado y, posteriormente, como presidente de las Cortes; Bobbio, más alejado de la actividad de partido, pero presente en todos los debates importantes tras la guerra y, al final, senador vitalicio. El encuentro entre los dos filósofos del Derecho tuvo lugar con la transición a la democracia en España, que en 1978 aprobó una constitución democrática, recorriendo así el camino por el que Italia y el mismo Bobbio habían marchado desde 1948: la transición de la dictadura a la democracia.
