Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This work covers the whole of northern England, west of the Pennines, from the River Lune to the River Eden. The author begins with the Lakes, the most famous tourist region in Great Britain, and goes on to deal with Carlisle and the Eden Valley, the Solway, Morecambe Bay, East Westmoreland and Lancashire, north of the River Lune. These are like the "outer suburbs" of Lakeland, and owe much of their personality and history to the presence of the nearby mountains. The book takes a look at some of the most popular places in England, and at the same time, draws attention to lesser-known spots which are well worth discovering. It points out landscapes and shore-scapes, woods and flowers, stone circles and Roman camps, farms, villages, churches, old iron ore mines and new art galleries. It drives to the heart of the district searching in the rock, in the physical shape of the landscape, in the history and in the temper of its people. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. …

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Norman Nicholson died in 1987. The five important books of verse he produced between the years 1944 ("Five Rivers") and 1981 ("Sea to the West") earned him the lasting admiration of readers well beyond the small patch of Cumbria which gave him all the subject matter he needed. In his introduction to the "Collected Poems", Neil Curry - a friend of Nicholson and a poet himself - discusses the nature of Nicholson's "parochialism" and its paradoxical universality, demonstrating just what was meant when his "Times" obituarist called him "the most gifted English Christian poet of the century". The full texts of the major collections - most long out of print - together with poems from "The Candy-Floss Tree" (1984) and other valuable items never printed in book form, substantiate that considerable claim. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1996 Sutton Publishing large format hardcover edition plus microfiche. Light reading wear else very good condition. This volume represents the second report on a major project of archaeological survey and excavation carried out between 1974 and 1982 by the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project (VESARP) based at Durham University, together with subsequent work by VESARP on an archival project and reports on fieldwork by other archaeologists between 1978 and 1989 in the area. Birsay Bay Project Volume 1 was concerned with the Brough Road excavations 1976-82. This volume looks at sites in Birsay Village and on the Brough of Birsay. The archaeological importance and significance of the Birsay Bay area of Orkney, particularly in the Viking and Late Norse periods, is again demonstrated in this volume which concerns itself with the well-known monuments of St Magnus' Kirk, the Earl's Palace and the Brough of Birsay, together with the newly-identified site at Beachview, immediately to the south of the Burn of Boardhouse in Birsay Village. The work directed by John Barber on the St Magnus' Kirk site has demonstrated the existence of remains of earlier ecclesiastical structures below the present building and contributes new information to the discussion of the location of the Christchurch Minster of the Orkneyinga Saga, as well as demonstrating the presence of a primary burnt mound on the site. Excavations by John Lewis and Beverley Ballin Smith at the Earl's Palace, together with renewed analysis of historical documentation by Denys Pringle, enable an up-to-date assessment to be made of the significance of this second major historic monument in the area of Birsay Village. Detailed analyses by Norman Emery and Christopher Morris of the unpublished records of the work on the Brough of Birsay between 1934 and 1939 are here presented for the first time. They demonstrate that this work uncovered a major complex of structures of the Pictish, Viking and Late Norse periods around a small church, itself discovered in 1866 by Sir Henry Dryden, whose work is also assessed here by Richard Fawcett.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In this autobiography Norman Nicholson vividly recaptures long-past times and places and demonstrates their compelling influence on the whole of his life. He details with loving precision a picture of small-town life in Cumberland in the first three decades of the century, of close-knit family and fiercely independent shopkeepers; he tells of his ancestors, his family, his neighbours, friends and teachers, and enriches his story with anecdotes, impressions and memories - of his triumph as a 'reciter' at local functions and his failures as a cricketer; of the vigorous social life of the Church, and of Methodism in particular, which brought a warmth and brightness even into the dark days of the Depression. Later, in a TB sanitorium in Hampshire, Norman Nicholson found himself in a pre-war rural Arcadia, surrounded by people very different from his neighbours at home. The effect on him was startling and disturbing, and when, two years later, he returned to Millom, it was with reluctance and trepidation - though nonetheless with the words, 'I thank God for a lifetime spent in that same town'. In this autobiography Norman Nicholson vividly recaptures long-past times and places and demonstrates their compelling influence on the whole of his life. He details with loving precision a picture of small-town life in Cumberland in the first three decades of the century, of close-knit family and fiercely independent shopkeepers; This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. With its publication by Faber in 1994, this Collected Poems revealed for the first time the true range of Norman Nicholson's output, as well the strength of the Christian element in his writing. All Nicholson's writing drew its nourishment from close observation of the part of Cumbria where he lived, and of which he was the most devoted, accurate and unsentimental describer and chronicler. In his introduction to this book, Neil Curry - a friend of Nicholson and a poet himself - discusses the nature of Nicholson's 'parochialism' and its paradoxical universality, demonstrating just what was meant when his Times obituarist called him 'the most gifted Christian poet of the century'.
