He also attended a night school during the winter evenings to improve his education, and later became involved with the Mechanics Institution. In 1846, he got a job on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, where he quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a station master. The book provides insights into the history of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and the development of the railway system in England. It also offers a glimpse into the social and economic conditions of working-class life in the mid-19th century. One of stranger 19th century railway histories - Normington was Divisional Superintendent of the L&Y for Yorkshire, having risen through the ranks from station clerk in 1847. Although an history of the company, much of the book is an account of Normington's career and reminiscences of interesting events on the railway (when you've read this it makes the current Railways look very professional!). One suspects that he was somewhat of a thorn in the side of the Directors who had their revenge (or so they thought) by not allowing him the traditional pensions etc, on his retirement. However Normington published this book as his own final revenge on the Directors. This was the first and for 50 years the only substantial work on the L&Y and although unorthodox does contain much information on the L&Y in the second half of the 19th century, although with considerable bias to the Yorkshire side of the operations. 375pp with fold out timetable, portrait frontis, errata slip etc. Contents VG, no foxing, and tightly bound. Original dark blue cloth/gilt boards, rubbed on corners, closed split to top of spine hinge. One of the rarer early railway histories.…
