First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Author listed as "Nevil Shute" to title page, and simply "Norway" to spine -- a bit unusual, since Nevil Shute Norway wrote fiction mostly as simply "Nevil Shute," usually reserving his surname for his aeronautical engineering work. (He worked on Britain's failed zeppelin program, and is credited with developing the hydraulic retractable landing gear.) Stamped "Discard" from the First Ward Branch, Binghamton Public Library, Binghamton, N.Y., with standard lending library attachments including manila card-holder to RFE and Rear Pastedown, showing this copy was borrowed approx. 17 times from February1949 through January, 1958. NO dust jacket; 7-7/8 inch octavo; dampstains to edges of several early pages, a reading copy. An elderly British traveler who doesn't much care for children works his way home from the south of France as the Germans cross the Marne, and then the Seine, stopping the trains, in summer 1940. He first agrees to take two, but eventually assembles a gaggle of displaced children of various nationalities who he insists must go to England, even volunteering to stay behind if they're allowed to escape. The 1942 American film -- screenplay by Nunnally Johnson -- starred Monty Woolley, Anne Baxter, a young Roddy McDowall, Otto Preminger, and J. Carrol Naish. Peter O'Toole headlined the 1989 made-for-TV remake. 306 pp.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Care in Nursing addresses the fundamental caring principles, values, and skills nurses require to provide sound care to their patients and to meet the challenges of nursing in the future. Exploring essential knowledge and competencies, the authors explore research, evidence and real life practice before outlining practical skills which will empower nurses to deliver quality care. A specific chapter also addresses how nurses can develop self-care techniques to meet the pressures and demands of a challenging yet ultimately rewarding career. Relevant to nurses in all fields and a diverse range of clinical and non-clinical settings, this is essential reading for nursing students, qualified nurses, mentors, nursing academics as well as nurse managers and leaders. Miranda Thurston has succeeded in producing something which strikes the right note. It is wide ranging in scope without being superficial and is accessible to the young learner. It is a sort of 'Wiki'. Just what the aspiring public health practitioner ordered. Professor John R. Ashton C.B.E., President of the UK Faculty of Public Health. Key Themes in Public Health comprises a series of introductory essays exploring key themes and concepts in public health. Ranging from political and economic concern with improving population health and reducing health inequalities, to debates about how to protect populations from new health threats, as well as a concern with individual responsibility for lifestyles and behaviour, the themes discussed include: determinants of health, globalisation, evidence, climate change, ethics, development, poverty, risk and population. Presenting provocative ways of thinking about key ideas in a concise fashion, each essay provides a basic grounding in the relevant theme as well as a departure point for further study by: Defining the theme in an accessible way Placing each idea in its particular social, political, economic and historical context Illustrating its application and significance for public health Identifying and exploring issues surrounding each of the themes This text provides an accessible overview for students new to public health who want to get to grips with the full range and complexity of this diverse and multidisciplinary field. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Childhoods in context offers a critical exploration of childhood, drawing attention to the physical and social context of children and young people's lives. Three key themes are explored: Childhood is always located somewhere. The book offers insights into childhood by focusing on places specially designed for children as well as the territories that children develop for themselves. Childhood is experienced through objects, people and places and through everyday routines. Discussions about childhood are rooted in the details of children's lives, whether on the street, in an institution or in different definitions of home. Childhood and adult identities are relational. Definitions and understandings of childhood are dependent on how adulthood is viewed. These themes are explored through accounts of home and family, school, public spaces and sites of work in local and global settings. They raise questions about methodological approaches to understanding childhoods in context which is the focus of the concluding chapter. This is the third in a series of four books, written by experts in the field, which provides an introduction to childhood degree programmes and related modules. The series features international case studies, examples and readings to supplement the chapters, and is illustrated in full colour. Other books in the series are: Understanding childhood: a cross-disciplinary approach Children and young people's cultural worlds Local childhoods, global issues. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
