Purporting to be more than just a voyeur's wet dream, this is a portrait of an extraordinary way of life, a study of people and places handled with sensitivity that aims to add to the sexploitation debate. There may be a recherche allure to the hookers turning tricks in go-go bars and the weird twilight world of the transexuals, but they are just bit-part players in a greater drama - a shifting world of illusion and reality, captured by the camera. Hardback.
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 149 pp., illustrations. This book describes, both in photographs and text, the political turmoil and violent street protests that took place during the first elected administration in Thailand after the 2006-2007 coup, its government led by the PPP (People Power Party) a place holder party of the TRT (Thai Rak Thai) which had been ousted by the military coup. The anti-government and nationalist-royalist PAD (People's Alliance for Democracy) entered Government House, the seat of Thailand's cabinet, and occupied it for months, before its protests culminated in the invasion of Bangkok's airports, the dissolution of the PPP and the overthrow of the government by forces seen as sympathetic to the PAD. In the course of the year, the police, the PAD and their opponentsthe Red Shirts, an alliance of government supporters and pro-democracy groupsclashed on several occasions. Incidents involving at times shocking violence laid bare Thailand's long neglected social, political and regional divisions and left it a deeply divided, unstable nation. Nick Nostitz covers this significant period of Thai History from the center of events. His articles, on which this book is based, caused considerable controversy when first published.

This volume begins with the first Red Shirt protests against the coalition government led by Abhisit Vejjajiva in early 2009 and covers in-depth the large protests in March-April 2009, including the Red Shirts' storming of the ASEAN Summit venue in Pattaya, the Blue Shirt controversy and the bloody clashes during the crackdown of April 13 on the protests during the Songkran holidays. The book also describes the subsequent rise of the Red Shirt Movement to become a social mass movement. The relatively rare public appearances of the PAD in the same period are also covered, including the lavish celebrations accompanying the founding of their political party. Nick Nostitz continues to follow closely the present era of color movements in Thailand, in both text and photo. An elaborate photo document of Bangkok's infamous Red Light District. Nick Nostitz is a 32-year-old German photojournalist living in Bangkok and working throughout the Far East. A member of Hamburg's Focus agency, his images have appeared in many magazines from Max and Spiegel to the Benetton published Colours. This book is the fruit of seven years' work, beginning in the early 1990s when he first decided to immerse himself in Bangkok's nightlife and produce a photographic record of what he saw and lived. 'Its about addiction' he says. 'Addiction to a crazy, hedonistic lifestyle that is also a refuge. I see a subculture where the exchange of money for sex is only superficial. Most people see only the prostitution and the explotation; my images challenge this view and go much deeper. For everyone caught up in the nightlife-bar girls and transsexuals, transients and tourists, refugees from their respective societies-there is an emotional addiction; an endless cycle of happy illusion, ecstasy, intensity, doubt and despair. My work symbolises these stages.'ISBN:
