Add to basketBooklet (Soft Cover with stapl. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Subscription. Great Men and Famous Women published 1894 by Selmar Hess (Parts 27 & 28 of 68 total parts) Selmar Hess (1847-1917) was born into a Jewish family in Bernberg, Germany. He left formal schooling at age 14 to help support his parents and their 6 children. Afte…r a few years, he traveled to seek greater opportunities. He first moved to London then followed the lure of opportunity which America offered at the end of its Civil War. After a year of wandering, he settled down in New York to excel in a publishing business, first in a partnership with two other young men under the firm name of McMenamy, Hess & Co., but soon quite alone. In 1873 he married Josephine Solomon who was his loyal and devoted helpmate until her untimely death in 1916. The firm of Selmar Hess always enjoyed the reputation of putting forth creditable work. It published large books which sold in parts on subscription; those dealing with history, art or natural history, of which The World's Great Nations, Art and Artists of Our Time, Our Living World, and A Child's History of the United States, are notable examples. Great care and thought were devoted to these productions to make them as perfect in authorship and in form as was commensurate with good business. Photo-gravure illustrations were introduced in these publications for the first time in America. For sale are two parts of the subscription for Great Men and Famous Women (Parts 27 & 28 of 68 total). The front covers describe the work as "A Series of Pen and Pencil Sketches of the lives of more than 200 of the most Prominent Personages in History." The rear cover displays faux signatures of 29 authors of these biographies. Also described the terms of a subscription. A part is defined as 3 full-page illustrations plus 24 pages of "letter-press" text in each part. Each full-page illustration was printed on its own plate not numbered within the text. Within each biography was a line-drawn portrait of that person. Pages are numbered through the entire subscription, not within each part. The parts for sale consist of pages 217 through 264 inclusive of the larger work and feature the biographies of 5 of the American Founding Fathers plus 3 other biographies. The Founding Fathers are Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. The other three are: Peter the Great, Maria Theresa, and Edmund Burke. Folio-sized booklet (soft-cover with stapled binding) has lime-colored wraps with black lettering. Covers show age with tattered edges and browning from edges toward interior. Interior is better. Complete, tight, clean and unmarked. 1st plate of each illustration plate groupings has a glassine sheet protection. Copyright 1894. Printed in the Hess Press, hence U.S.A. No Edition nor print-run info found. No ISBN nor LCCN. MSR = US $0.25 per part ($17.00 per subscription.) Thanks for looking. Not Stated (illustrator). Faux Signature (No Value Added.

Contained within the walls of the "small fortress" Theresienstadt, and formerly a resort for the Czech nobility, Terezín became notorious as a Nazi concentration camp, housing over 150,000 Jews during World War II. Though intended as a temporary holding area before its inmates were sent to extermination camps such as Auschwitz, about 33,000 died while living there because of appalling conditions. Its mostly Czech inmates included noted scholars, artists, musicians, and 15,000 children, only 150 of whom survived. This rare album is a guide to the buildings of the camp with photos showing, among other things, the torture chamber, crematorium, solitary confinement cells for women, the gallows, and the cemetery. aPPROXIMATE DATE DETERMINED FROM A PENCIL INSCRIPTION ON THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER WHICH HAS 1948.
