Fernald was a prominent pioneer of Santa Barbara County, CA. during the latter half of the 19th Century. He was a miner in the gold rush, a self-taught lawyer, member of the California bar at 22, and by age 23 had been sheriff, district attorney, & judge of Santa Barbara County.
