Szilard played a key role in the development of nuclear physics by proving that self-sustaining nuclear-f…ission reactions were a practical reality. With Enrico Fermi, Szilard produced the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction in a squash court at the University of Chicago. Szilard & Novick were both key contributors to the Manhattan Project, though in the shadow of the atomic blasts in Japan, Novick became a dedicated proponent of nuclear arms control.
