Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Limited edition. 14/16 Signed Lothar Nowack on colophon. Oblong Quarto. Unpaginated. Original red illustrated dustjacket with red lettering on cover and spine over green cloth with illustrated plates and red lettering laid onto cover and spine. Decorative floral endpapers. Xylographic montages about reasons, abysses, undergrounds, backgrounds, heights, depths, shallows, ascents, crashes. (Xylographische Montage über Gründe, Abgründe, Untergründe, Hintergründe, Höhen, Tiefen, Untiefen, Aufstiege, Abstürze.). Nowack's montages are based on wood engravings from the family magazines "Illustrierte Welt" and "Ein Buch für Alle" of the years 18951909, roughly covering the era of the German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm. Nowack's work was inspired by caricatures from the collected works of J.J. Grandville, depicting French life during the time of King Louis Phillipe and Max Ernst's surrealistic works of the 1920s and 1930s. Nowack's first montages were created in the 1970s, some of them published in Riewert Quedens Tode's magazine Randlage No. 12 in 1980. In the early years of the 21st century Nowack revived the idea and created new montages publishing 50 of them in this edition, the source material now some 100 years removed from the time of its original publication. The full page b/w montages are printed with a Canon Ink Jet Printer iP4300. Each montage with captions and satirical rhyme in German, Gothic script, on opposite page. Contains epilog by the author. Text in German.
