Bel exemplaire. 1 vol 8vo (165 x 105 mm) of : 368 pp. (including title and 1 map); [4] pp. (privilege, table). (Mottling on the corners of a few leaves). Dedication to Pope Julius III (1487-1555): woodcut vignette of his coat of arms on the title page. Ex-libris on back cover: "Ex Libris D. De Auria Montis Aldei Comitis". Half vellum, spine ribbed, hand-titled, marbled paper-covered boards, handwritten title on lower edge. Rare first and only edition of this account of Charles V's campaign in Tunisia against Ottoman corsairs, by the 16th-century Italian writer, diplomat and patron Orazio Nucula. The present work is the account of the attack and capture of Mahdia (Tunisia), which took place from June to September 1550, during the struggle between the Ottoman Empire and the Spanish Habsburgs for control of the Mediterranean. In that year, a Spanish naval expedition, also made up of Charles V's imperial troops and commanded by the Genoese condottiero and admiral Andrea Doria (1466-1560), besieged and captured the Ottoman fortress of Mahdia, defended by the Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis (1485-1565), known as Dragut. A condottiere is a noble soldier trained in the art of combat, but above all with the money to equip soldiers, thus putting his art of war at the service of states. The expedition also included the Spaniard Bernardino de Mendoza, as well as the Knights of Malta and their Grand Master Claude de la Sengle. Turgut Reis used the fortified coastal town as a base for his piratical activities along the Spanish and Italian coasts. Although Mahdia was abandoned by the Spanish three years later, they nevertheless took care to demolish all its fortifications to prevent the city from being reoccupied by the Ottomans. At the beginning of the book is a Latin-Italian glossary of terms used in the book to designate African cities of modern foundation that had no La.
