Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. I, Nuligak; translated from the Eskimo by Maurice Metayer; illustrations by Ekootak; Peter Martin Associates, Toronto, 1966. From the blurb I, Nuligak will tell you a story. It is the story of what has happened to me in my life, all my adventures, many of them forever… graven in my memory. These are the words that begin one of the most remarkable books of this or any other year the autobiography of Nuligak, a member of the Kitigariukmeut tribe of Canadian Eskimos. In Nuligak's life is compressed the transition from a Neolithic culture to our modern society. Nuligak began his life using tools of stone and bone virtually identical to those used by our own ancestors ten thousand years ago. And in his twilight years he passed his time writing his autobiography on a typewriter. Nuligak was born in 1895 in the Mackenzie Delta. He died, full of years and experience, in 1966 in a hospital in Edmonton. His story the story of his life in a translation faithful to his original Eskimo manuscript is one of contrasts. Incredible physical hardship and privation in the harsh Arctic environment mixed with gaiety and laughter in the human warmth of the Eskimo community. There have been and will continue to be a great many books written about the Eskimo. But there is only one written by an Eskimo. And there will never be another like it. The world of Nuligak's youth is gone forever from the Canadian arctic. Victor Ekootak was a graphic artist based in Ulukhaktok, Inuvialuit Settlement Region, NT. He died in 1966. His full-page illustrations are a wonderful compliment to the text. The Arctic map endpapers includes an Eskimo translation of English place names. This book, 208 pages, is in fine condition, in a very-good dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. A very scarce book.
