Folded sheet printed in blue ink, 37 x 56cm. Chart shows signs of use including a small central stain, some annotations in ink (one of which has been largely erased) which appear to be the work of an early student and some light wear and soiling. This chart, likely printed in the early Meiji period, serves as a comprehensive gui…de to the Japanese language for English speakers. It features handwritten and block letter representations of each Japanese kana character, alongside their corresponding pronunciations in katakana. For further reference, Roman numerals are included, along with translations of the Japanese zodiac signs and seasons into English. The chart is attributed to Awaya Bunzo, a prolific publisher of Nishiki-e woodblock prints in Osaka during the early Meiji era, roughly around the 1870s.
