Dem haben sich Autoren wie etwa Günter Kunert, Gerhard & Christa Wolf, Franz Fühmann, Günter de Bruyn u.a. entgegengestellt, in dem sie Romantiker in persona zu Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts gemacht haben. In Gedichten, Erzählungen, Biographien, Essays etc. - hierin ist ein mutiger Emanzipationsakt gegen die gängige Kulturpolitik zu sehen, der mit persönlichen Risiken verbunden war. So etwa der (offiziell nicht vorhandenen) Zensur oder gar dem Ausschluss aus dem Schriftstellerverband, was einem Berufsverbot gleich kam. Da die benannten Autoren allerdings auch im Westen rezipiert wurden, schütze sie oft ihr bekannter Name. Der Osten wollte sich diesbezüglich nicht weltöffentlich die Blöße geben, kuturelle Größen zu regelementieren.
